Project Summary

Fairphone, launched in 2013, is the producer of the most ethical smartphone in the world, Fairphone.

The company has always had a strong emphasis on environmental sustainability and fair labor practices, maximizing the sourcing of conflict-free materials and the conditions of workers in this supply chain as much as possible. Fairphone's modular design makes it easily repairable and upgradeable by the customer, extending the device's lifespan and reducing electronic waste. Fairphone 5 has just being released and since its launch the company has sold over 400.000 phones, with a community-driven online marketplace where individuals can buy and sell the versions of the phone or its components, according to their specific needs.

Why is it on CER?

Fairphone is on CER as what they achieved is unique and remarkable from many points of view. The smartphone industry has always been profoundly, structurally unethical, with huge ruthless corporations and extremely complex supply chains, making it virtually impossible for anyone to offer any kind of alternative, let alone an ethical one.

After a few years of understandable struggling, Fairphone managed to offer a smartphone on the market which is order of magnitudes more ethical, fully functioning and at a reasonable price, especially when considering its superior duration and repairability. They are now a profitable and fully transparent company, that like few others has pushed the boundaries of what is possible in terms of open, sustainable, community-driven hardware development and we are sure its achievements will influence any Commons infrastructure having to deal with the challenges of hardware production (we have been using Fairphone ourselves for years!)
