Project Summary

Celo is a blockchain protocol launched in 2020, focused on scaling the Ethereum infrastructure with solutions fitting the state of the current global digital economy, especially the Global South. It emphasizes mobile-first accessibility, enabling fast transactions with low-cost, multi-currency gas fees and an ultralight application for users.

It has developed at an impressive pace, now claiming a global community with over 1,000 projects from 150+ countries, and it’s very vocal toward in planetary regeneration actions and inclusion of underserved areas and communities, representing one of the strongest players of the movement called Regenerative Finance (ReFi).

Why is it on CER?

Celo is on CER for its effective approach to financial inclusion via blockchain technology, and its commitment to regeneration and the Commons, especially in emerging economies. It’s an organically growing, well designed protocol that is giving promising results in terms of finding real world use cases for blockchain adoption, grounding these in local communities and climate action.

In the last years it contributed financially to the growth of the ReFi movement, sponsoring the majority of the events self organized by local nodes of this network worldwide, especially in the Global South; it’s now establishing a presence in the different bioregions of the world engaging with local stakeholders, as the recently launched Celo Europe DAO.

A group of individuals and organizations is also working on a Celo Public Goods unit meant to achieve a clearer governance overall and better cultivation of the Commons at the core of Celo’s ecosystem.
